Acorn Brewery Take Gold & Bronze.

Barnsley’s long-standing Acorn Brewery has once again been successful in receiving awards for both Old Moor Porter and Yorkshire Pride at the SIBA North East Region Competition 2018, held in York

Acorn’s Old Moor Porter triumphed with a bronze award in its class (Cask British Dark Beers, up to 4.4%) with Yorkshire Pride taking Gold in its class (Bottle/Can British Bitter, up to 4.4%)

It is the first accolade for Yorkshire Pride since Acorn began brewing the pale golden bitter, Director of business development, Christy Hughes, said ‘I’m extremally proud to have received this award, from judges by our peers. Yorkshire Pride is my personal favorite from our core range so I was over the moon to accept the award on behave of the whole team at Acorn Brewery. I’ll be looking forward to seeing how the ale progresses in the SIBA Beer X National final early next year.’

Old Moor Porter took a Bronze for the 3rd time running in its class, Managing Director Dave Hughes said ‘Yet again our Old Moor Porter has picked up a fantastic award that confirmed the consistency and quality that the team at Acorn Brewery produce week in week out. I am so proud of the beer produced for our customers, the team work extremely hard to ensure we delivered on our one of our business values (Quality) and we are thankful that our customers continue to support the Acorn brand daily. Without the customer, we would not be able to achieve what we have done over the years. This will be Acorns 3rd award this month have been awarded joint Bronze for Barnsley Bitter in its class at the Campaign for Real Ales Champion Beer of Britain Awards.

We look forward to the future and hope to see our customers enjoy our award-winning ales down at the Acorn Beer Club, which we kick off on the 31st August.

Acorn Brewery’s famous Barnsley Bitter has triumphed as the joint 3rd best bitter in Britain having received a Bronze award at the Champion Beer of Britain competition for 2018.

The top accolade comes from Camra (Campaign for Real Ale) following a blind tasting among judges from the industry.

Acorn’s managing director and head brewer Dave Hughes said: “Competition in the UK among cask-ales brewers is ferocious, so we are absolutely delighted that Camra have voted our Barnsley Bitter as the joint 3rd best bitter in Britain. It is yet more great praise for the first brand we brewed as a traditional Yorkshire style bitter when we started up 15 years ago.”

The chestnut coloured Barnsley Bitter (3.8%) is brewed using Maris Otter malt and English hops and has won many top accolades since Acorn launched in 2003.

In 2006 and 2015 Barnsley Bitter also triumphed with silver in class at the Champion Beer of Britain Awards.

The original yeast strain from the Barnsley Brewery of the 1800s is used in all Acorn brands that include core beers Barnsley Gold, Old Moor Porter, Gorlovka Imperial Stout and Yorkshire Pride alongside Barnsley Bitter. Acorn has won more than 50 awards in 15 years.

Dave Hughes adds: “Our beers are brewed using the same yeast strain as the original and famous Barnsley Brewery, so I believe this is a real feather in the cap for the town as well as for Acorn. “

Acorn Brewery Celebrate their 15th Birthday!

The team down at the Wombwell based Acorn Brewery are celebrated their 15th birthday. It was last week in 2003 when the Cask Ale Crew produced their first brew of the much renowned and multi award winning Barnsley Bitter. So now that Acorn Brewery is well into its teenage years, the brewery boys and girls have been developing a Decades range, which has involved the public naming the beer.

Christy Hughes (Director of Business Development) said ‘The Decades range has been rather exciting. We want to involve our customers in the brew process, we thought what better way to do so by inviting our customers to name the beer, with the winner’s name featuring on the pump clip. So far, we have run three competitions with a further three to take place, watch for more details on Social Media.’

Acorn marked their 15th year of brewing by holding a party at the brewery, they were joined by customers, supplier, family as well as, Stephanie Peacock MP of Barnsley East. Dave Hughes (Managing Director) said ‘We’re starting our 15th year on a real high, we have refurbished the brewery in preparation to open the Acorn Brewery Club, which all the team are very excited about. The last Friday of every month we will be inviting our customers to join the Acorn Brewery Club, giving everyone the opportunity to come along and enjoy a pint of two here at the brewery. The past year has been an excellent one for the brewery with new members joining the team and now the introduction of the Acorn Brewery Club.

Acorn now regularly brews and sells around 30,000 pints of beer a week. They supply to over 400 pubs in the UK, all the major supermarkets and also export a range of beers to Italy. Currently a consignment of ‘Yorkshire Pride’ beer is in the brewery waiting to be shipped to Southampton bound for one of the P&O cruise ships, making Acorn a truly global beer!

Head Brewer Steve Bunting recently visited Stocks Farm in Worcestershire to take part in one of their annual hop walks. Steve brought back with him sacks full of the precious fresh hop cargo and the following morning the Acorn team we’re busy using the First Gold variety for the latest brew of ‘Pretty Green’ which will be a delightful 3.5% ale, vibrantly fresh pale straw in colour. It has a wonderful citrus, sweet orangey aroma and slender spicy notes and will be out and about in pubs and bars near you soon!!!

Acorn Brewery is delighted to announce that two directors of the brewery recently ‘tied the knot’.  Founder and Managing Director Dave Hughes and Business Development Director Christy Winfield, were married at Rogerthorpe Manor near Badsworth on 3rd September. Of course the health and happiness of the bride and groom was toasted with a pint of Barnsley Bitter – what else!!  Dave and Christy then went on to honeymoon in the Maldives – you won’t find any Barnsley Bitter there Dave !!

Acorn Brewery Visit 2017 GBBF

Last week, on Tuesday 8th August, Acorn Brewery’s Managing Director Dave Hughes, Director of Business Development Christy Winfield, Head Brewer Steve Bunting and Company Accountant Michael Thorpe hopped on a train down to London to attend the GBBF, held at Olympia. The competition is held yearly, and this year marks the 40th anniversary of the event, as well as the 11th time Acorn Brewery’s most well-known beer, Barnsley Bitter, has made it to the final.

The event is an excellent opportunity for brewers and drinkers to come together to enjoy beer, as it is open to people within the beer industry and members of the public who are passionate about beer. It goes without saying that there’s a huge variety of beers on offer, as well as fantastic London street food and live bands over the course of 4 days – what more could you want?!

Speaking of her first time attending GBBF, Christy described it as an “exciting experience with so many choices of beer, filled with amazing opportunities, such as meeting new people.”

“I am so proud of how far I’ve seen the business develop since starting here 6 months ago,” says Christy, “and I am definitely looking forward to the next beer competition we are involved in!”

Dave, who has attended GBBF much more over the previous years, says that the festival has been “yet another great celebration of Britain’s favourite drink.”

Barnsley Bitter didn’t win the competition, however, the prize went to a brilliant beer, Goat’s Milk, by a well-deserved Warwickshire brewery, Church End. Despite returning to Barnsley having won nothing, the team had an exceptional day at GBBF, and would like to congratulate Church End Brewery on their success.
